QUICK ANSWER WoW Forever has no realms. Before you make a character, you pick a ruleset: Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP. Hardcore comes later. You cannot switch rulesets with the same character, you cannot group with players on another ruleset, and on PvP you can only play one faction. Not sure? Normal is the safest pick.
This choice is the biggest one you make before launch, and it is hard to undo. Here is what each ruleset does, who it suits, and the traps to avoid.

What a Ruleset Is
In older WoW versions you picked a realm. In Forever, you pick the type of world you want. Each ruleset is one large shared world for your region, with its own groups, dungeons, raids and community.
Blizzard built it this way to take the stress out of picking the “right” realm. Everyone in your region on the same ruleset plays in the same space.
The Rulesets at Launch
| Ruleset | What It Is | Open-World PvP | Factions You Can Make |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Adventure and monsters | Your choice | Both |
| PvP | Combat focus | You can be attacked across much of the open world | One only |
| Roleplay | Story and in-character play, with rules on names and behavior | Your choice | Both |
| Roleplay-PvP | Roleplay plus open-world faction conflict | Yes | Not stated by Blizzard |
| Hardcore | High risk, death can end your run | Later | Both |
Tip: Blizzard names the one-faction rule only for the PvP ruleset. It has not said whether Roleplay-PvP works the same way. Check the creation screen before you commit.
Which Ruleset Should You Pick?
| You Are | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to WoW or unsure | Normal | Fights with other players are optional, and both factions are open |
| Want danger in every zone | PvP | Enemy players can hit you in most of the world |
| Fantasy and in-character play | Roleplay | Names and behavior follow roleplay rules |
| Want roleplay with danger | Roleplay-PvP | You get the community and the faction fights |
| Playing with friends | Whatever your friends pick | You cannot group across rulesets |
| Want a one-life run | Wait for Hardcore | It is not part of launch |
Tip: Talk to your friends first. Picking a ruleset alone and asking later is the most common way to end up split from your group.
The Faction Lock on PvP
On the PvP ruleset, you can make characters for only one faction. Make an Alliance character, and you cannot make a Horde character there and vice versa. Normal, Roleplay and Hardcore let you make both.
- Blizzard also plans balance systems for PvP, similar to Season of Discovery.
- If one faction gets too large, new characters for that faction can be blocked for a while.
- This pause can hit you on launch week, so have a second choice ready.
Tip: Your faction on PvP is a long-term choice. Pick the one you want to play on every character you make there. Want to play both factions? Play on Normal.
Playing With Friends
| Situation | Can You Play Together? |
|---|---|
| Same ruleset, same faction | Yes. Groups, dungeons and raids work |
| Same ruleset, different faction | No. Horde and Alliance cannot group |
| Different rulesets | No for groups, dungeons and raids |
| Battlegrounds across rulesets | Yes, except Hardcore |
Tip: Agree on three things with your group before launch: the ruleset, the faction and the language setting. Names are unique across all rulesets in your region. A name you reserve on one ruleset is not free on another.
You Cannot Switch Later
- Blizzard says moving between rulesets is limited on purpose. To play another one, you make a new character.
- Collections and Legacy points are shared across your account on every ruleset except Hardcore.
- Hardcore is sealed off. Progress from the other rulesets cannot enter it.
Tip: Not sure about a ruleset? Make a test character early, look around, and delete it. Your account progress stays.
Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP
- Roleplay has rules for names and behavior. Names can be flagged if they are not medieval or fantasy, or if they point to real people, brands or places.
- Roleplay-PvP was added late. Blizzard confirmed it on October 22, after weeks of player requests.
- Blizzard said it worried about splitting a small roleplay community across two rulesets.
- Blizzard also said it could link auction houses if a ruleset gets too quiet. There is no date or population rule for that.
Tip: Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP have smaller populations than Normal and PvP. If you want the biggest crowd, pick Normal or PvP.
Hardcore Comes Later
- Hardcore is not part of launch, and Blizzard has given no date.
- It is a sealed ecosystem. Hardcore characters play only with other Hardcore characters.
- If a Hardcore character dies, you can move it to another ruleset, including PvP.
- Battlegrounds stay separate for Hardcore.
- Progress earned in Hardcore can carry into other rulesets, but it does not work the other way.
Language Setting
You can set a preferred online language. It helps you meet players who chose the same one.
- Press Escape to open the Game Menu.
- Open Options.
- Find Languages and Social under System.
- Choose your language under Preferred Online Language.
This setting is for your whole account. After you change it, you wait 24 hours before changing it again.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing alone. If your friends play on a different ruleset, you cannot group with them.
- Picking PvP without thinking about the faction lock. One faction per ruleset, with no second chances.
- Expecting to switch. There is no switching. A new ruleset means a new character.
- Waiting for Hardcore on day one. It is not in the launch list.
- Ignoring the language setting. It is a quick fix that helps you find your community.
