Names in WoW Forever work in a new way. Every character gets a first name and a last name, and only the full pair has to be unique. This guide covers who can reserve, the rules, the bug that blocked some names, and a plan for everyone who missed out.

Who Can Reserve a Name
You need to own one of three packs on the WoW account you play. The perk is tied to the exact account that bought the pack.
| Pack | Price | Early Name Reservation |
|---|---|---|
| Skyborne Heroic Pack | $29.99 | Yes |
| Skyborne Epic Pack | $59.99 | Yes |
| Warcraft Forever Collection | $79.99 | Yes |
| No pack | Free with subscription | No |
Tip: The window closes on November 3. Blizzard’s post says “through November 3” and does not list a closing hour, so do not wait until the last minute.
How to Reserve Your Name
These are the steps Blizzard lists.
- Update your graphics drivers.
- Install the Battle.net desktop app and let it update.
- Pick World of Warcraft from your game list.
- In the Game Version menu above the Play button, choose World of Warcraft: Forever and click Install.
- Press Play and choose your ruleset.
- Create up to 3 characters with the names you want.
Tip: Own more than one WoW account? Log in with the one that holds the pack. The wrong one will show an access error (WOW51900337).
Tip: The 3-name limit counts every ruleset together. Make two characters on PvP and you have one left for Normal or Roleplay. This limit only applies during early reservation.
Name Rules
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Two parts | Every character needs a first name and a last name |
| Length | Each part is 2 to 12 letters |
| Accents | Allowed (ñ, ö and similar) |
| Not allowed | Spaces, hyphens, numbers, symbols, apostrophes |
| Repeats | The same letter cannot appear more than twice in a row |
| Capitals | First letter up, the rest down |
| Conduct | No slurs, sexual terms, real politicians, Blizzard staff names or big lore names like Thrall, Arthas or Sylvanas |
| Roleplay ruleset | Names can be flagged if they are not medieval or fantasy, point to real people, brands or places, or use more than one word |
Tip: The name check reads both parts together. Splitting a banned word across your first and last name will not always get it through.
Tip: Names that pass the filter can still be flagged later. A flagged name means a forced change, and Blizzard may act on your account.
How the Two-Name System Works
- Only the full pair must be unique in your region.
- Two players can share a first name if their last names differ.
- Guilds and friend groups can share a last name, as long as each full pair is free.
- Do not like seeing a second name over every head? Press Escape, open Options, then Nameplates, and tick My Secondary Name. The second name hides in the world but still shows in chat.
The “That Name Is Restricted” Bug
On the first night of reservation, the name filter blocked many normal names. Any name with the letters “con” in it was rejected. Examples include Connor, Falcon, Deacon and Constance.
- Blizzard admitted the problem on its forums.
- Blizzard said the fix would arrive with the next realm restarts in each region.
- Players who were turned away could try again after the restart.
- By October 29, the “con” problem had cleared for some players, but other errors kept showing up.
- Reservation night also had long queues, disconnects and missing Roleplay rulesets for several hours before things settled.
Tip: A real restricted name stays restricted. Retrying only helps if your name is an ordinary one that the bug caught.
Errors You Might See
| What You See | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| That name is restricted | Either the “con” bug or a truly banned name | Retry after the restart. If it still fails, pick a new name |
| That name contains mature language | A separate filter, not part of the bug fix | Change the name |
| Character creation timed out | The attempt failed. It does not prove your name is saved | Reconnect, check your character list, and retry if the character is missing |
| Ruleset temporarily unavailable | A server problem on Blizzard’s side | Wait a few minutes and reconnect |
| Access error WOW51900337 | The selected WoW account has no access | Switch to the account that owns the pack |
| Faction option locked on PvP | Creation can pause for the faction that has more players | Try the other faction or come back later |
If You Missed the Window or Have No Pack
You are not locked out of anything. Here is what to do.
- Plan to create your characters at launch. Everyone without a pack does the same on November 4.
- Write down 5 name pairs. Because first names can repeat, a free pair is easier to find than the old one-name days. Change the last name first.
- Check the Roleplay rules if you plan to play that ruleset. Its filter is stricter.
- Try the in-game random name button if you run out of ideas. Blizzard points to it as a backup.
- Be ready at 3:00 PM PST. Names are first come, first served, and a queue is possible.
- Do not count on a paid name change later. We found no official word on name changes after launch.
Tip: Beta names do not carry over. Blizzard wiped the October 21 stress test, and beta characters should be treated as temporary.
Is a Pack Worth It Just for a Name?
Our take: probably not.
- Blizzard says it cannot guarantee any name, even with a pack.
- The first and last name system already lowers the chance of a clash.
- Reservation week had bugs that blocked some paying players.
- The pack is worth it if you want the Skyborne race. The name perk is a small extra.
Tip: Thinking of buying today? Check that the shop page still lists Early Name Reservation before you pay.
