Just when the player is getting used to the world of Cuphead, out comes a blue slimeball called Goopy. At first, Goopy looks to hold respect for his opponents by tipping his hat, however, this is simply a Ruse of an Ooze.
Goopy is one of the first few bosses that the player faces in their initial journey of Cuphead. As such, the boss battle isn’t notoriously hard but can cause a few problems when starting out.
We have a video guide of the fight on YouTube.
Phase 1 – Goopy (Small Form)
The fight starts out with Goopy jumping about in his regular size. The player must position themselves out of Goopy’s bounce patterns.
Goopy’s bounces can be dodged by either dashing out of the way or simply moving away from his jumps.
Goopy has a 2nd move in the first phase where he stops bouncing, and becomes a giant fist and lunges at the player. This move can be quick but can be anticipated whenever Goopy stops bouncing.
Players can move away from Goopy and maintain a distance to escape the lunge attack or duck down.
Phase 2 – Goopy (Large Form)
Once Goopy takes enough hits, he’ll enter his second phase where he tosses a coin in the air. Next, 3 Pink question marks appear. These question marks can naturally be parried for 3 special cards in total.
Make sure to collect them fast as Goopy begins to double in size. Once Goopy grows in size, he’ll bounce around like in the first phase, except now the radius of his bounces are larger making it harder to dodge.
While the bigger form makes Goopy an easier target to hit, it’s a good idea to maintain as much distance and read his bounce patterns to stay safe.
Goopy also has a punch attack, where he pulls back his body and a red boxing glove appears to punch in a straight direction.
Similar to Phase 1, the player can duck to evade the punch or simply, stay away from Goopy when he stops bouncing.
If you have access to the Spread Shot, this phase should be a piece of cake.
Phase 3 – Gravestone
Once Goopy takes enough damage, he passes out and becomes a giant Tombstone. The gravestone moves from side to side about 3 times before it slams down on the player’s position.
This is the only attack that Goopy does in this phase.
To beat Tombstone Goopy, simply count the number of times he passes the player. When the count reaches 3 move away from him and let him slam. Continue attacking, using the lock option on your controller, this lets you attack him across.
It’s also a good time to release all the specials that you’ve saved from the previous two phases.
Conclusion – Goopy Le Grande Boss Fight
Overall, Goopy Le Grande isn’t a tough boss battle and is simple enough to beat in the first few tries. In fact, having access to the ‘Spread Shot’ ammo type, will make Goopy much easier to handle compared to the Pea Shooter.
We have a boss guide video on Goopy Le Grande, featuring Co-op gameplay and how to beat Goopy in a simple manner.
